L’histoire commence en 1976. Diplômes d’école de commerce et des ponts-et-Chaussées en poche, Michel Richard fait une rencontre décisive, celle de Jean-Jacques Lebouc, plombier à la corde à nœuds. Il attrape le virus du métier et, en mars 1977, il crée les établissements Michel Richard, plombier à la corde à nœuds. Son credo : inventer des solutions nouvelles, sur mesure, pour effectuer des travaux d’accès difficile, là où on ne peut pas monter d’échafaudages.
En 1979, Michel Richard déménage son activité dans la Drôme et s’entoure d’une petite équipe d’ingénieurs et de guides de haute montagne. Pour aller encore plus loin, l’équipe adapte les techniques de l’alpinisme et de la spéléologie aux travaux en hauteur. Ainsi, des chantiers réputés impossibles trouvent une solution adaptée
En 1983, la société « Corde à Nœuds » est renommée CAN, et crée le bureau d’études Mecanroc, spécialisé dans l’étude mécanique des roches et les ouvrages de protection contre les chutes de blocs. La même année, CAN essaime au Royaume-Uni, puis en Martinique (1985), à la Réunion, (1989), aux USA (2000) et en Algérie (2006).
A cette époque, le métier est jeune et l’encadrement inexistant. En 1988, Michel Richard s’engage alors dans la création du syndicat professionnel SNETAC. Avec d’autres entreprises du secteur, il fait évoluer les « travaux acrobatiques » d’une pratique artisanale à une profession structurée, avec un cadre juridique. Il crée aussi sa propre unité de formation, FORMACAN, aujourd’hui filiale du groupe.
Ainsi, en conservant la passion des origines, CAN a contribué à faire évoluer son métier vers une culture de la qualité et de la sécurité.

The story began with Michel Richard in 1976. With a business school degree under his belt, plus a civil engineering degree from the École national des ponts et chaussées (one of France’s most the prestigious engineering schools), Richard made a decisive encounter with Jean-Jacques Lebouc, a plumber who worked with knotted rope. Richard caught the ‘rope bug’, and in March 1977 he founded his own business under his own name, with a group of branches specializing in ‘plombier à la corde à nœuds’ (knotted rope plumbing). Its guiding principle: invent new, custom-made solutions to carry out difficult access works on sites where scaffolding is not an option.
In 1979, Michel Richard moved his business to the Drôme area in south-east France, where he brought together a small team of engineers and mountain guides. To take things one step further, the team adapted mountaineering and speleology techniques to build new solutions to develop the sphere of working at height. And this is how projects which were formerly considered impracticable were able to become reality.
In 1983, the company ‘Corde à Nœuds’ was renamed CAN, and set up the design department Mecanroc, specialized in mechanical design engineering in the field of rocks and rockfall protection systems. The same year, CAN expanded to the UK, then to Martinique (1985), Reunion (1989), the USA (2000) and Algeria (2006).
At the time, the profession was still very young, without any official supervision or framework. So, in 1988 Michel Richard set out to create a trade union, the SNETAC. Working hand in hand with other companies in the sector, he helped turn the sphere of difficult access work from a skilled artisan practice into an organized profession with a legal framework. He also set up his own training facility, FORMACAN, today one of the group’s subsidiaries.
This is how CAN has played a central part in developing its own professional sector, and pushing it towards a culture of quality and safety, while keeping its original passion.
